Description
INTRODUCTION
GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) is an international symbolic language that if often used on mechanical engineering drawings to better define a product
This one-day course covers the Advanced GD&T topics per ASME Y14.5 (both the 2009 and the new 2018 versions). There is some overlap with the regular GD&T class, but the focus of this training would be advanced topics, as well as some little-known areas of GD&T that are not covered in a regular GD&T class. The class is mainly a lecture format, with ample opportunity for questions, and participants are welcome to bring sample prints to discuss with the instructor during breaks or after the class.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
On completion of this workshop, the participant will be able to:
- Review of GD&T symbols and rules
- How to assign proper datum features based on part function
- Learn of the changes in the Y14.5 standard (the 2018 version, released in early 2019)
- Explain the less-common GD&T tools: translation, datum shift, resultant condition, all over, boundary, dynamic profile
- Recognize inadequate or illegal GD&T callouts(dos and don’ts)
- A special focus on tolerance stack calculations, including RSS statistical approach
- Select proper GD&T callouts for a mock design
ALL of our courses are developed based on decades of front-line industry experience of the instructor.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE
This course is ideal for anyone who has a need to get into the advanced topics of geometric tolerances on a product print. Product engineers, manufacturing engineers, CAD designers, quality inspectors, and other engineering and manufacturing personnel will all benefit from becoming fluent in GD&T.
PREREQUISITES
This is an advanced GD&T class. Participants should have prior knowledge of GD&T. If not, you may want to register for our regular GD&T class prior to taking this class.
COURSE CONTENT
This is a 1-DAY CLASSROOM TRAINING with an instructor that has decades of front-line industry experience. Alternately, a Virtual Workshop with a Live Trainer is also available. The virtual workshop is conducted in 2 sessions (4 hours each) over a live web based interactive class.
All material covered during the training will be in accordance with the new edition of the US national standard, ASME Y14.5-2018. Each person attending will receive a training manual (~160 pages, coil bound) as the main handout, which details the concepts of GD&T and also includes many examples of the proper application of tolerances.
A non-graded test can be given in class to help participants gauge their understanding of the concepts. There will be many other exercises worked into the class to allow practice of the concepts as they are covered.

INSTRUCTOR
John-Paul Belanger is a nationally recognized instructor and consultant in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). In addition to GD&T, he instructs other courses related to blueprints and product design, including Basic Print Reading and Tolerance Stacks. He is a veteran of classroom training and interactive web-based training.
For over 25 years Mr. Belanger has adapted these courses to a wide range of participants across North America and Europe. He is certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a Senior-Level GD&T Professional, and he holds a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan specializing in aircraft design and aviation safety.
